Department of Zoology
Dr. Ayan Srivastava
Assistant Professor and Head
The Department of Zoology is a constituent entity of the Faculty of Science, MSM Samta College (BR Ambedkar Bihar University), founded in 1985, and has been one of the leading departments in the country. The teaching efforts in the department has been tailored to train students, leading them to a B.Sc. degree and other academic programmes. It has not only provided up-to-date teaching but also taken the lead in introducing newer disciplines to the teaching curricula. Thus, the introduction of subjects such as genetics, ecology, endocrinology, biochemistry, and evolution in the 1960s in the teaching curricula, much ahead of other departments in the country, helped develop an understanding of biology as a living, growing science. In that respect, the department has been a pioneer in zoology teaching in India. This level of growth and progress has been possible largely due to the development of technical expertise and the creation of state-of-the-art laboratories through a number of individual research projects by the faculty.
Since its inception, the department has been rich in traditional biological sciences and, at the same time, continues to recognise the new developments in biological research. The department had and continues to have an esteemed faculty with diverse, cutting-edge research programmes: classical zoology, biochemistry, molecular biology, fish biology, animal behaviour, ecology, developmental biology, immunobiology, reproductive endocrinology, cancer biology, microbiology, genetics and systems biology of the Cell. The broad base of faculty expertise combined with the state-of-the-art Laboratories create an environment that fosters innovation and advancement in science and technology. The Department of Zoology is an academic department that focuses on the scientific study of animals, including their behaviour, physiology, genetics, and ecology. The department provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the biological processes involved in animal life, as well as their interactions with each other and their environment. Overall, the Department of Zoology plays a critical role in advancing our understanding of animal life and its complex relationships with the environment. Through cutting-edge research techniques and innovative technologies, zoologists continue to uncover new insights into how animals live, communicate, reproduce, and survive in different ecosystems around the world. By studying these fascinating creatures up close, they help us gain a deeper appreciation for the incredible diversity of life on Earth, as well as our own place within it.
BEGINNING:
The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1985. With the natural growth classes of B.Sc. Part-I, II & III came into being. The Graduate course in Zoology was introduced in the session 1985-86. Despite the fierce competition, the department has succeeded in producing spectacular results for the B.Sc. classes.
